It's best to have a quiet environment as you begin to practice. Once you become skilled, you'll be able to tune out noise better and find your own quiet mind space. | Steps for Learning Meditation | Getting Started | Find a comfortable position, preferably seated, so that your body is not tense or required to be in a certain position. Beginners generally find an outstretched position comfortable. Do what works for you. You may often see conventional meditation poses such as the one above because it aids your breathing. However, your position is not what's important at first. Get comfortable and just get started! | | Goal 1: Breathing | Close your eyes, then breathe in deeply and out slowly through your nose. With each breath, try to slow your heart rate. Imagine breathing fresh oxygen into every single cell of your body! | | Goal 2: Relaxation | Starting with your head, begin to relax the individual muscles in your body (eyes, neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, fingers, buttocks, thighs, legs, ankles, feet, toes, etc). | Goal 3: Be Present | As you are breathing and relaxing your body, try to focus your mind on those activities alone. Push out other thoughts as they attempt to enter your mind and refocus. As you relax the different parts of your body, reflect on the role it has in supporting you. With each inhaling breath, give it new life and thanks. |
